The Sunnyvale Town Center was sold once again, and according to this Mercury News article, the aging mall will be demolished. Target and Macys are privately owned and will remain. The new downtown will include a mixture of retail space, commercial office space, homes, a hotel and a grocery store.

Funny you should be posting this right now, Pam. I've been wondering what happened to Sunnyvale Town Center the past few days and I almost took a detour to drive by it tonight on my way home. Sunnyvale Town Center was another one of the malls that I ended up at a lot as a kid growing up in Santa Clara.

I thought it was already demolished actually. They've been doing some heavy development in the adjacent lots. I figured the remnants of the mall would already be toast by now.

According to the article, city officials fired the last developers after several unexplained construction delays. It's the closest mall to Silicon Valley, so it should do well if they can only get their act together.

Huh? What does that mean? I mean Valley Fair is not that far away and the Great Mall is arguably East Bay, but would be barely so and only a skip away from the tech core of Santa Clara.

Well, if you consider Mountain View to be the heart of Silicon Valley, which I do since I work there wink.gif, Sunnyvale Town Center is the closest mall. It would be nice for people like me who like to avoid the freeways during rush hour to be able to go to the mall and do some errands. In rush hour, Valley Fair is a good 20-30 minutes away, at best. Sitting in traffic is not my idea of fun so I try to avoid it as best as I can, so I usually stay late and use the onsite gym at work or try to do my errands at places that are close to work and on my way home.

Silicon Valley is Mt View (I know you are kidding). It was IBM, GE Nuclear, HP and Fairchild that brought the best and the brightest from all around the country to Santa Clara Valley. Apple, Tandem, Intel, and too many secondary companies too mention followed. Now most of them are dust (you should see the IBM and GE Nuclear campuses, a pile of rubble) but they were the high paying jobs that attracted the talent that spawned Sun, Cisco, and too many others to mention. So the companies are now migrating north to Santa Clara, Mt View, Palo Alto but Silicon Valley is Mt View, that is a stretch.

The best mall is oakridge you snobs. Great stores: Sears, Macys, Target and sports fan places. Who the hell would want to find a parking place at Valley Fair? Who likes shopping at Great Mall without jogging shoes? I would go to Eastridge before Great Mall. If you really want eccentricity, go to stanford shopping center or (gag) santana row. I have made a vow of never to spend one dollar at santana row or Valley Fair or wallmart. I like places like westgate, Mervyns, target (pay their employees benefits), and longs/walgreens (my personal favorites). Great employees, great sales.

Show your support with your dollars. Would you want to work at Wall mart with no benefits and $8/hr. I pay my assistant $10 and give him a place to live and feed him. It is the best job anywhere. I wish I could do it.

Even better, get to know the stores in your local downtowns if you really want to support your local economy. The people who own the malls only need to provide a good shopping experience for you to want to go there. The people who pay the rent in the downtowns need to contribute to the community and create local culture to survive.
